Black & White — a whole new dimension

I’ve been explor­ing more black & white pho­tog­ra­phy late­ly.  I used to think black & white dig­i­tal pho­tog­ra­phy was as sim­ple as flip­ping a switch.  It’s much more sub­tle and com­plex.  Just as you can vary the col­or tones in a col­or pho­tog­ra­phy, those same adjust­ments will affect the appear­ance of a black & white pho­to­graph.  It’s not as black & white as I thought it was!

Here’s a pho­to from Yosemite last year which I worked on for a juried gallery exhi­bi­tion at the 1650 gallery.  Many land­scapes are bet­ter suit­ed for black & white, because the tex­ture and details may be more inter­est­ing than the col­ors.  Ansel Adams was on to something!
